By : Intan Nur Hasanah, Saturday 24th Juli 2021

In the current era of globalization, progress in the field of science and technology is growing rapidly. We can easily access various things by accessing the internet, be it on a cellphone or laptop. Until now, technological developments are increasingly sophisticated and very easily accessible by anyone. The Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) stated that the number of internet users in Indonesia rose to 73.7 percent of the population or equivalent to 196.7 million users in 2020. There was an increase in the number of internet users by 8.9 percent or equivalent to 25.5 million users, the number of internet users is growing very rapidly.

Today's internet access can also be accessed quickly and used by various groups. In the beginning, internet access could only be accessed and understood by adults, but nowadays even small children and even toddlers can access the internet via mobile phones. AndNot only in big cities, even now the internet has penetrated to the countryside. The internet network is expanded to remote villages in Indonesia through the presence of the Communication and Information Office media center and government centers in various cities and regencies that provide free internet access to people who need or want to use it. Internet exposure and smartphone ownership are used for various things, including accessing social media and playing online games.

Online game is a game that can be accessed by several players who are connected in one internet network (Adams and Rollings, 2010). Before the existence of this online game, children tended to play with their friends face to face. And the games he plays are just traditional games that are not only entertaining but also train children's brain intelligence. Examples such as congklak, halma, ludo, hide and seek, beklen ball, and other games. However, as the times progressed, these games were increasingly forgotten and replaced by online games. Online games that are more attractive in terms of the appearance of the game will become an addiction for children to play. Children will be willing to leave other activities that should be done in order to play online games.

During the Covid-19 pandemic and as a circular letter is issued Minister of Education and Culture No. 36962/MPK.A/HK/2020 concerning Online Learning and Working from Home in the context of Preventing the Spread of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) has increased the consumption of digital entertainment, home becomes the central point of any activity for some people. One activity that is becoming more and more common in this situation is playing video games to pass the time.Boredom then becomes their main enemy and is often overcome by surfing in cyberspace and social media via smartphones, including playing online games. This online game is increasingly popular among application users as an alternative to fill their spare time with many consumers practicing social distancing in the midst of the covid pandemic. Later, many people will use their free time to find new games or play their favorite games until they are satisfied.

Market research institute IDC estimates that the gaming industry will experience a 20 percent increase in revenue in 2020. The duration of people playing games at home has also increased during the pandemic, whether playing console games, PCs, or mobile games on smartphones. Online games such as Mobile Legend, PUBG, Free Fire, are increasingly being played during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey released by the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) noted that the increase in Indonesian internet users during the Covid-19 pandemic increased to 73.7% or the equivalent of 196.7 million internet users. This survey highlighted the behavior of internet use during the Covid-19 Pandemic which found that 49.3% of people access online videos, 16.5% to play online games and 15.3% of people spend their time accessing online music. Based on the Global Digital Overview report released by Reportal in 2020, almost 60% of the world's population has been connected to the internet. Meanwhile, around 80% of internet users aged 16-64 years play games every month.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic has hit all countries, including Indonesia, face-to-face learning in schools has had to be shifted to virtual face-to-face learning at home or more often called online learning. PThe sight of children glued to their gadgets is also common and makes parents nervous. But they often don't have a choice because they need a substitute 'friend' to kill time--outside study hours which are also online.Because of this, children have more free time at home. Because online learning was not conducive at first. After studying, children will usually fill their spare time by playing online games instead of reviewing material or doing assignments given by the teacher. Children are willing to postpone their tasks to play online games which sometimes will waste a lot of time being wasted. Indeed, not all online games have a bad impact. But if playing online games has become an addiction for children, this will have a negative impact on children.

Here I will review the negative and positive impacts of playing online games game

Negative Impact of Online Games

1. Causes of Addiction

Most of the games nowadays are designed in such a way as to be addictive for the players especially during this pandemic. If someone is very enthusiastic about the game, sport creators can take additional advantage of increased purchases of gold/tools/characters and therefore the like. but the profits of this manufacturer really produce a bad impact on the psychological health of gamers.

2. Encourage to try negative things

Although there are not many, but very often we come across cases of UN agent online game players trying and stealing different player IDs in various ways. Then take the cash in it or take off the expensive tools. This ID theft activity usually also proceeds to theft of different accounts like Facebook, emails using keyloggers, cracking software systems etc. This kind of theft is not only limited to ID and password theft, but can even result in the theft of money - although usually not a lot (of tuition money as an example) and the theft of time.

3. Talking rudely and dirty

Online game players will definitely talk gauze and dirty if the game is not as expected. On-line gamers usually utter the obscenities and slurs that have been enjoyed in online restaurants or game centers. But don't be surprised if children who play online games are usually naughty children who always say rude things.

4. Other activities are neglected

The attachment to completing tasks in the game and therefore the pleasure of enjoying them usually makes various activities neglected. once attending, college work, schoolwork or work become neglected for enjoying the game or confusing it. Especially during the pandemic, everything is online so you have to be able to use one to do it, and most people prefer to play games and ignore other activities.

5. Changes in diet and rest pola

Changes in resting patterns and consumption patterns are common in gamers caused by reduced self-control. Food becomes disorganized and that they usually move to bed earlier to induce the clock (cheap nets in the morning).

6. Disturbing health

Sitting non-stop before the pc for hours clearly displays a negative impact on the body. These diseases include eye strain, hemorrhoids, capal tunnel syndrome, and metabolism. Now this is a general concern during the pandemic, where playing online games too often will disrupt health and be susceptible to COVID-19.

Not only the negative impact that will be obtained in playing the game but the positive impact as well. Of the 13 studies compiled by this journal, 12 of them said that playing games had a positive impact on the players. All studies evaluating mood and stress noted significant positive improvements (from gaming), compared to resting, browsing, or engaging in relaxing activities. Stress usually occurs when someone is outside their comfort zone, causing the body to respond differently than usual. Not only that according to Januari Nehemiah Positive Impact of Online Games :

1. will learn English indirectly

2. Have a lot of friends (although only limited in cyberspace)

3. will make money (Participate in various tournaments and various online game competitions which may get prizes in the form of money)

4. As a refresher after viewing is complete

That is the positive and negative impact of playing online games. It all depends on the player who plays the online game, wants to have a positive or negative impact for him. But hopefully gamers are more concerned with the positive impact of playing this game, especially during a pandemic like this. And I will also provide an effort to prevent you from getting too addicted to online games:

Prevention

To avoid the emergence of a worse impact, it is necessary to prevent the "addicts" of online games. This effort can be started by providing other, more positive activities for them to slowly replace their habit of playing online games.

Parents have an important role to start changing their habits by providing more productive and positive activities. For example, by inviting children to exercise or participate in social activities with the community. So that the time is diverted to something useful and positive. The hope is of course that they will gradually reduce their activity in playing online games and reduce the level of addiction to online games.

How To Not Be Addicted:

  • Manage study time and play time.
  • Saving cash for additional useful things
  • Make plans for your future life.
  • Be aware of the negative effects of online game addiction
  • Make friends with people who are honest and have a purpose in life.
  • Lots of worship.
  • Always think positive and avoid laziness.

How to Overcome an Addicted Person:

  • By doing outdoor activities such as planting trees, feeling the grass under your feet and feeling the sun on your face.
  • With religious thinking tactics, it is by entertaining the energy and enthusiasm of the female students towards artistic and positive things. If they're going to program themselves to get fun from tv and play online games, they should even be able to program for higher-end alternatives. If he or she will self-control to play online games, then they will even be programmed to learn self-control.
